Book Report
By Zhang Shiyong
Once upon a time, there was a Canterville Castle. Everyone said it was haunted. They were terrified. Five hundred years later, the Otis family from America bought the castle. They were brave and did not believe in ghosts.
The Canterville Ghost was written in 1887. During that time, ghosts in other stories were very scary and evil, and people were always afraid of them and hated them. Oscar Wilde, the author of The Canterville Ghost, however, created a different ghost, who was miserable, and created an amazing human family too, who treated the ghost in a different way. The naughty twins and their elder brother Washington liked to play tricks on the ghost. Instead their sister Virginia talked to the ghost in a friendly way and helped him. The ghost even gave her a box of jewels.
The most important message of the story is that ghosts and human beings are equal, and human beings should treat ghosts well and have some sympathy for them. Oscar Wilde is the master of witty and amusing stories, and this novella is no different.
